What Do Capacitive Touch Screens Have to do with Desk Phones & Productivity?

At Accurate Telecom, we want to ensure that your communications system is always performing at best-in-class standards to ensure continued reliability.

When we picture the business desk phone, there’s a good chance a fairly traditional image comes to mind—a handset, to be sure, probably plenty of buttons and maybe even a paper sheet of quick-reference contact numbers behind a clear plastic protector. But the latest desk phones for business couldn’t be further from this.

Today, you can get features like mobile integration, the latest Bluetooth and USB connectivity and HD audio sound quality, to name a few.

Consumer expectations are leaking into the business world

In addition to this, the design and ergonomics of the desk phone has changed for the better. This is partly due to the ‘consumerization of IT,’ where the devices and technologies people use in their homes start becoming forming their expectations of business devices and software as well.

Take the rapid adoption of the tablet in the home. Many households now reach for a tablet for basic computing needs rather than a PC or laptop. While the ‘instant-on,’ long battery life and attractive form factor play a part in the acceptance of tablets, the maturity of the touch screen is what really brings them to life.

Think back to when the first touch devices came out. Early smart phones, tablets and even PCs were hard to use. The software wasn’t intuitive to touch input and the sensitivity and calibration left most users frustrated at best. Fast forward to today, and we just expect all touch devices to work perfectly, to respond to the lightest of swipes and to be completely natural to use.

Resistive vs capacitive touch screens

Why wouldn’t we want the same for business desk phones? Early desk phones with touch screens used something called a ‘resistive touch screen,’ which relies on the mechanical pressure of a finger or stylus-you have-to physically press the touch screen for it to respond.

By contrast, a ‘capacitive touch screen’ uses the electrical properties of the human body to change the properties of the screen’s electrical field. This allows for far more accurate responses to even the lightest touch, and can also support multi-touch gesturing.

Reduce training and improve productivity

It is the capacitive touch screen that is being built into most modern devices today and the latest desk phones are no exception. This means you can swipe through a list of contacts, press and hold to make an edit, make a light touch to signal an action.

As a result, you dramatically reduce training needs, since everything is as intuitive as using a modern smartphone or tablet. Productivity also improves as the touches are far more accurate and navigating menus can be done with confidence and greater speed. If avatars are also included in the design, then usability improves even further, as just tapping on a familiar image is easier than having to search through long lists of contacts.

This is another example of how the consumerization of IT is arriving in the workplace. And we’re harnessing this phenomenon for our latest desk phone series.

Design and functionality of a phone plays a critical role in the buying decision. VoIP vendors such as Toshiba, Mitel, NEC, Panasonic and Samsung let customers select IP phones or digital phones. This is a major advantage, especially for businesses upgrading from a PBX to an IP-VoIP PBX as it might be possible to re-use their existing digital or analog phones with the new IP-VoIP PBX.

On the other hand, vendors such as Cisco, Adtran and ShoreTel offer only IP phones as part of their portfolio, though a customer can also connect analog phones to the IP-VoIP PBX by using analog telephone adapters.

For variety, Cisco and Mitel are the only two vendors that offer more than 25 different IP phone models – from simple single-line IP phones to multi-touch color LCD’s

NEC’s UT880 IP phones are also impressive offering full unified communications (UC) functionality geared for executive users. ShoreTel’s offer more than 15 ip phones models with similar functionality as other vendors.

The latest buzz these days is the cloud and cloud communications is not an exception. But buzz should not always be an indicator of a business case for technology purchases. Smart businesses are asking what is driving the rush to the cloud-and they are getting solid answers. Here are some reasons businesses are moving to the cloud today!

1. Cost

Predictable monthly costs. This may seem like old news, but many companies don’t realize just how much they can save by moving their communications to the cloud. By hosting a phone system over the Internet, businesses are charged on an “as needed” basis, paying only for what they use. That makes cloud-based communication systems especially cost-effective for small businesses—eliminating the need to pay for the installation and maintenance of a traditional phone system.

2. Management
Outsource IT support to the provider. The management of an on-premise solution can be very expensive. Because of the complexity of today’s communications systems, it can often takes an entire IT department to manage. Cloud-based communications can help alleviate the burden by eliminating maintenance, IT work load and some of the costlier internal infrastructure, including servers and storage systems.

3. Scalability
Scale up or down based on users. Anyone who has moved or expanded an on premise phone system knows just how difficult it can be.  Whether a business is growing, moving or sizing down, the cloud provides the flexibility and scalability the business needs now and in the future.  And with cloud based systems, businesses can access and add new features without any new hardware requirements. .

4. Vendor management
One vendor for everything. With cloud communications, a single vendor manages the communication systems on and off-site, and the IT departments are freed up to focus on other high-priority issues. (Let IT get back to that e-mail fix!)

5. Technology

Instant updates. With cloud communications, service is outsourced and upgrades are deployed through automatic software updates. This allows organizations to stay focused on their business and leave the upgrades to the the cloud communications vendor.

6. Quality of service

Maximize up-time and downtime coverage. For many businesses, up-time is critical. To keep things running, they rely on the ability to scale and leverage remote work teams or serve customers from anywhere. For these kinds of businesses, cloud communications maximizes up-time and coverage through multiple, remotely hosted data centers, helping them avoid costly interruptions and downtime.

7. Affordable Redundancy

Leverage shared resources. With an on-premise communication system, hardware and software geographic redundancy can be challenging o deliver. But when multiple business share resources in a cloud environment they get access to a level of redundancy that would be too expensive to procure with an on-premises solution.

8. Disaster recovery

Business continuity made easy.  Businesses are using the cloud to protect themselves from the effects of disasters. With cloud communications, they can get up and running quickly after a disaster, or in some cases, continue running the entire time. Some reroute calls to remote locations and cell phones. Other rely on remote access to voicemail or use cloud-based auto attendants continue taking calls and providing information. It’s a hare-to-resist combination of reliability, resiliency and redundancy.

9. Access for customized cloud-based applications

When businesses are connected to a cloud communications platform, they get access to the latest communications applications and developments, like customizable business workflows. These applications help boost productivity and revenue streams for their businesses in ways that traditional communications programs cannot.

10. Future-proofing

Digital transformation is here. Most companies have started transitioning to the cloud in one form or another to future-proof their businesses, as most applications today are being constructed in the cloud. Making the most of new applications requires the ability to integrate fluidly with business communications system. Integrating cloud-based applications with a cloud-based communications system is significantly easier than integrating cloud-based applications with an on-premises one, so businesses looking to future-proof their operations are moving to the cloud.

All manufactures of IP products have pros and cons that you should compare with your organization’s needs when purchasing a IP VoIP PBX system.

For large enterprises or expanding mid-size businesses looking at a complete IP Suite with accompanying LAN infrastructure, the comprehensive Suite’s offered by Mitel, Toshiba and Cisco are probably your best bet. A small company with basic LAN infrastructure that does not need VLAN segmentation and QoS might want a more hybrid offered by Toshiba, Panasonic, NEC and Samsung. Businesses must keep in mind that when moving to a IP-based PBX that involves IP phones, it is imperative that the network infrastructure is VoIP ready to ensure a smooth transition.

(Reuters) – A path has been cleared for telecommunications company Avaya Inc to exit Chapter 11 bankruptcy in agreement with its senior creditors and the government’s pension insurer, Avaya said in a statement on Monday August 7, 2017.

Avaya said that it had backing from holders of more than half of its $4.38 billion first-lien debt and a settlement with the Pension Benefit Guaranty corp to terminate its underfunded salaried employee pension plan.

The agreements could cut more than $3 billion from the 6.3 billion in debt Avaya had when it entered bankruptcy in January.

Avaya had faced challenges in trying to transition to software and services from a business centered on hardware, and failed to sell its call center business.

Avaya also struggled with pension obligations. The PBGC has said Avaya’s hourly workers plan was underfunded by $660 million and its salaried workers plan was underfunded by $1.24 billion.

The Santa Clara, California Based company will pay the PBGC $300 million and give it 7.5 percent of the stock in the reorganized Avaya in return for transferring obligations for the salaried plan to the PBGC, according to court documents.

The reorganized company will maintain its pension plan for hourly employees.

Under the plan, which must be approved by Avaya’s creditors and U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Stuart Bernstein in Manhattan, debt holders will be repaid with a mix of cash, new dept and stock in the reorganized company.

A new board will be named by holders of the company’s first-lien debt, who will own a majority of the stock in the reorganized company.  Holders of the first lien debt include funds affiliated with the Blackstone Group’s GSO Capital Partners, Davidson Kempner and JP Morgan Chase & Co. as well as dozens of other firms.

Avaya estimated in court papers its enterprise value, which includes debt and equity, at $5.721 billion.

Savvy Avaya customers are working on technology migration strategies to insure continued VoIP system development and technology enhancements. One migration path available to current Avaya customers is Mitel.
